We love Handelsbanken!
Handelsbanken is a major Swedish bank that provides a range of banking services. Formed in 1871, Handelsbanken operates in a decentralized way of working and has a strong local presence. The bank serves individual, corporate, small and medium-sized enterprise, and high net worth clients across Sweden, the UK, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and the Netherlands.
Handelsbanken has been phasing down its lending to fossil fuels over the years so that less than 0.01% of its lending portfolio (£24M at the end of 2022) relates to the fossil fuel sector. At the same time, it has been rapidly ramping up its support for the renewable energy sector and launching environmentally-friendly products such as green mortgages.
It has been measuring and disclosing emissions enabled by its lending, it has set a number of climate targets (including near-term) and it has put in place a detailed plan for transitioning away from carbon-intensive sectors.
Bank.Green was founded on the belief that banks have had an easy time from their customers for too long.
Our mission is to encourage as many people as possible to take a stand - to refuse to let their money fuel environmental destruction any longer. Considering who you bank with, we think you probably agree. This is your chance to spread the word with us.
We can’t say it better than environmentalist Bill McKibben: “Money is the oxygen on which the fire of global warming burns.” But don’t wait for the fire department to turn up – join us!
